Midlife is not a breakdown—it’s a breakthrough."

Diseph Igoni, LMFT

I understand that women face unique mental health challenges during midlife, often experiencing feelings of isolation and alienation. You don't have to suffer in silence or endure menopause alone; I offer support during this transformative period of life. My focus is on promoting women's psychological and emotional well-being by addressing the changes, obstacles, and issues that commonly emerge during this significant phase of life, including:

Hormonal Changes and Menopause

Perimenopause, Menopause, and Postmenopause:  These stages can bring about symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and cognitive changes, often referred to as "menopause brain" or "brain fog." Symptoms such as forgetfulness, mental cloudiness, and difficulty concentrating can impact daily life, relationships, and work.

Mental and Emotional Health

  • Anxiety  and Mood Disorders:  Hormonal fluctuations during midlife can increase the risk of anxiety and depression.

  • Stress and Trauma:  Past traumas or current stressors may resurface or intensify during this period, affecting overall well-being.

Relationships

  • Romantic and Family Dynamics:  Midlife can bring changes in relationships, including marital shifts and evolving family roles.

  • Eldest Daughter Syndrome:  Many women in midlife find themselves revisiting the roles and expectations established in their youth. The unique pressures and responsibilities often placed on firstborn daughters teaches at a young age to assume caregiver roles, mediating family conflicts, and striving to meet high expectations.   This early role can lead to long-term psychological effects that can manifest in midlife leading to traits such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, identity  challenges and more.

Life Transitions

  • Identity and Purpose:  As children leave home and careers change, many women reassess their identity and life goals. This "empty nest" transition can evoke grief and a sense of lost purpose, particularly for those who have focused on caregiving.

  • Caregiving Roles:  Balancing care for aging parents while managing personal aspirations can be challenging. Many midlife women belong to the "Sandwich Generation," juggling responsibilities for both their children and elderly parents. This dual role often results in heightened stress, limited time, and emotional exhaustion, making it tough to prioritize personal goals and self-care.

Working from a client-centered perspective, I ensure each woman feels seen, heard, and supported in her unique midlife journey. By fostering a safe and inclusive environment, I empower women to navigate the complexities of this period with confidence and resilience, advocating for their needs and rights along the way.
